CALL FOR CHAPTERS Software Process Improvement for Small and Medium Enterprises: Techniques and Case Studies

Submission deadline for proposals, June 9th, 2006

A book edited by Dr. Hanna Oktaba (UNAM) and Dr. Mario Piattini (UCLM)

Software quality and software process improvement are key areas in Software Engineering nowadays. ISO International standards such as ISO/IEC 12207 or ISO/IEC 15504, and models like CMM, CMMI, etc. are increasingly used as a means to improve software processes and products. These models are conceived for big organizations like USA DoD, NASA, multinational software factories, etc.

However, most of the software organizations (nearly 90%) are small and medium enterprises (SME) which contribute to very valuable and widespread products.

Nevertheless, these standards and models do not explicitly address their needs.

The first International Research Workshop for Process Improvement in Small Settings organized by Software Engineering Institute (October 2005) has demonstrated the increasing interest for new proposals and experiences of that kind of organizations.

The main objective of the book is to to provide practical and useful guidelines, models and techniques for improving software processes in small and medium enterprises (SME). Real case studies and lessons learned will be included in the book, as successful examples of experiences in improving software process capability.

Two kind of chapters are solicited:

1) Chapters about different concept related to software process improvement in SME:

Representative topics include but are not limited to the following:
- Software process life cycle for small enterprises
- Metrics for managing software process in SME
- Agile software process evaluation
- Knowledge management for software process improvement
- Aligning business strategy with software projects in SME
- Software product lines in small settings
- Software testing improvement in SME

2) Chapters describing real case studies and lessons learned about software process improvement in SME

Proposals for possible chapters should include 2/3 pages, stating the issues to be discussed. A brief description of each author's CV and background should be included. Make all submissions in electronic form.

Acceptable formats include Word and RTF.

SUBMISSION PROCEDURE
Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before June 9th, 2006, a 2-3 page manuscript proposal clearly explaining the mission and concerns of the proposed chapter. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by June 15th, 2006, about the status of their proposals and are sent chapter organizational guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by July 31st, 2006. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a blind review basis.

The book is scheduled to be published by Idea Group Publishing in February 2007.
